Brian Benton, the Creative Force Behind 816 Day
816 Day is Kansas City's own signature celebration—founded by Brian "BIZZY" Benton, a true hometown visionary. The idea sparked from a simple Facebook post asking why KC didn’t have a day like other big cities. Brian didn’t wait for someone else to make it happen—he just did it. The first unofficial celebration kicked off in 2017 at KC Jukehouse, and the vibe was just what KC needed.

By the next year, 816 Day had leveled up with support from local organizations and an official proclamation from the Mayor. The event evolved into a dynamic mix of live music, art, poetry, fashion, and homegrown talent, shining a light on Kansas City’s culture.

2019 brought even more energy, expanding into the historic streets of 18th & Vine with a full-on block party, vendor market, Kids Zone, and a Black Film Fest. Then came 2020, and despite the pandemic, it was the biggest year yet: yoga sessions, a community church service, live game shows, food trucks, performances, and a packed comedy show—all flowing throughout the day.

More than 6,000 people showed up—and not a single issue. That’s the power of community.

Now, Brian and the team have accomplished adding the Power & Light District as one of 816 Day's locations with a weekend filled with vendor shopping, family fun days, concerts, and more.

816 Day keeps growing, and the goal is simple—keep showing love for Kansas City and bring even more people into the celebration.

Let’s go, KC. And of course—Go Chiefs!
